Supporting Information

  1. 90% of 2,000+ servers surveyed in the last year are running at less than 7% of their capacity. This provides the opportunity for consolidation of 90%. Does not include re-use of existing hardware for other purposes, such as a Data Centre.
  2. Assuming that the depreciated lifetime of a server is 4 years.
  3. HP Pro-liant ML350 G5 quad core dual Xeon processors) settles to approx 400w. Cost is £350.40 per server per year running 24hrs a day, 365. Cost of Electricity is 10p per KWH (Source: ukpower.co.uk).
  4. Industry standard Annual Maintenance costs for a server range from £595pa
  5. HP ProLiant ML350 (G5) SAS Array Tower Server (Base Model) Xeon Quad-Core (E5310) 1.6GHz 1GB (2x512MB) no HDD SAS DVD. Costing £2300+vat from HP Sales assuming 4 yr straight line depreciation with no residual value.
  6. HP Pro-liant ML350 G5 quad core dual Xeon processors) settles to approx 400W.
  7. Does not include: expensive out-of-hours system maintenance, reduced administration and re-utilisation of office space and a reduction in cooling requirements.
  8. Source DEFRA: A conversion factor of 0.523 KG of CO2 per KWH – This represents the average carbon dioxide emission from the UK national grid per kWh of electricity used at the point of final consumption. It only includes carbon emissions at UK power stations and does not include emissions resulting from production and delivery of fuel to these power stations (i.e. from gas rigs, refineries and collieries, etc.). The figure is based on a rolling average of emission factors for the last 5 years for which data is available (2001-2005). The rolling 5 year average factor is deemed by DEFRA as a suitable metric for calculating the carbon emissions of a company's electricity use.
  9. Based on a Ford Focus 1.6TDCi which emits 115g/KM (Source: Ford Motor Company). Assuming an average mileage of 12,000miles per year; a single vehicle would emit 2,300 KG of CO2 per year. Lifetime benefit is calculated as the number of cars taken off the road per year, multiplied by 4 (ie, 4 years).
  10. Source: carbonfootprint.com – Native broadleaf trees provide sustainable habitat for wildlife and enhance the natural landscape. These are therefore commonly used for Carbon offsetting projects. Over the course of its lifetime a broadleaf tree absorbs on average 730KG of CO2.

The green savings calculator is based on using VMware virtualisation software for server consolidation purposes. VMware can also provide high availability computing using a Storage Area Network (SAN) and re-utilising redundant servers. Customer specific requirements and savings can be verified following a Capacity Planning exercise.
