Just before midnight on Saturday 16th June a team from Castle gathered at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, ready to set off on the St Andrew’s Hospice 10th annual Midnight Walk.
Long journey ahead
Alison Adam, Pauline Aird, Linda Findlay, Karen Rodger, Isabelle Samuel, Alison Scott and myself (Lyndsey Massie) – along with a few others – were in high spirits and prepared for a long night. Over 700 people were taking part, so we knew we’d be in good company for the long journey ahead!
When the clock struck midnight, we were off on a trek around the towns of North Lanarkshire. The 13 mile route would take us through Carfin, New Stevenston, Holytown, Mossend, Bellshill and Motherwell before looping back around to the Sports Facility. It was quite a sight to see 700+ sets of light-up headgear bobbing along in the darkness!
The first few miles passed by with ease and before we knew it we were at the first rest stop at the four mile mark. The organisers had done a fantastic job of ensuring there were plenty of snacks and refreshments available to keep us all going. After a quick break we got back underway and pushed on to the next rest stop with some help from a little music (who doesn’t love a singalong to the Greatest Showman?!).
Thankfully the rain stayed off and we were treated to a beautiful sunrise just before 4am, although some of us were a bit too bleary-eyed by this point to notice! Time began to pass more slowly as other walkers dropped off at the optional 8 and 10 mile marks and the last few miles seemed to take longer than the previous 10 combined, but the Castle clan trudged on!
Around 4:45am the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility came back into sight and we crossed the finish line as a team, exhausted but proud and very much ready for a cuppa!
Messages of encouragement
We would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who not only very kindly sponsored us but who also sent us many messages of encouragement. It was an amazing night with the members of our team smashing their own personal goals while still being able to smile, walk and even do the slosh at the end of it all!
The money we have raised will be split between the St Andrew’s Hospice and Mary’s Meals. If you would still like to sponsor us you can do so on our JustGiving page.
