Infrastructure refresh brings stability for Macphie

Case Study: IT & Cloud Services

Macphie of Glenbervie Ltd is the UK’s leading independent added-value ingredients manufacturer, with over 80 years experience and success, underpinned by a real passion for food and innovation. The business specialises in developing and manufacturing premium quality food ingredients and solutions, with products designed to meet the needs of bakers, chefs and food manufacturers worldwide.

The business operates from two manufacturing sites in Scotland, producing a range of ready to use culinary sweet and savoury sauces, desserts, frozen and formed products, as well as a selection of bakery mixes, icings, fillings and frostings.

In 2013 the company’s IT infrastructure was nearing its end of life and was proving unreliable, with patches and maintenance on servers required every day and issues with loss of email.

Macphie worked closely with Castle to upgrade its core infrastructure with new host servers and a SAN, while at the same time enhancing backup and disaster recovery arrangements.

Anne Leatherbarrow, IT Supervisor at Macphie, explained how the partnership approach with Castle created a stable, efficient IT platform for the business:

“We had reached a stage where as a result of the continued success and growth of the business, our IT infrastructure was no longer fit for purpose to meet our everyday needs.

“The existing system didn’t have the capacity to cope with increased levels of data and a greater number of users across our Stonehaven and Glasgow sites. An issue with Microsoft Exchange meant that email could become unavailable two or three times a day without warning.

“This was seriously eroding users confidence in the IT platform and it became essential to address the issue and upgrade our infrastructure to support the continued growth of the business and start to regain user confidence.

“We were aware of Castle’s expertise in this area and worked very closely with them to identify the most effective solution which resulted in a new host server and SAN with improved business continuity arrangements.

“Our system is now stable, reliable and fit for purpose and the feedback from users has been positive allowing the business to continue its focus on long term planning based on newly sound foundations.

“Castle assisted us in fully scoping and planning the project and subsequently demonstrated their broad range of in-depth technical knowledge working closely with our team to ensure that what was scoped was delivered on time and within budget.”
