Seamless Upgrade to SunSystems v6 for Borders College
Case Study: Infor SunSystems
Borders College is one of Scotland’s most successful colleges, offering a wide range of courses from an introductory level through to Higher National Diploma.
Students at the College benefit from a first class learning environment at three campus locations in Galashiels, Hawick and Newtown St Boswells. These main campuses are supported by a number of community based learning facilities throughout the Borders.
Each year, around 5,500 students enrol for the wide range of day and evening courses, many of which are in subject areas that allow them to dovetail into local employment opportunities.
The finance team at the College had been working with SunSystems version 5 since Castle upgraded the system from version 4 in 2009, and recently chose Castle once again to upgrade to SunSystems version 6.
Sara Halliday, Head of Finance and Procurement at Borders College, said:
“The College IT system had been running for many years on Windows XP which restricted us to using SunSystems version 5, however a refresh to Windows 7, meant that we could move over to version 6.
“A key objective was that the upgrade could be undertaken with as little impact on day to day business and without having to spend time rewriting templates or learning to adapt to a new system.
“The first thing we noticed was that the new home page, which is based on Windows, was much more user friendly. Some of the interfaces are now automated with other software, which has reduced the hours spent on manual input.
“Because Infor Query & Analysis (formerly Vision) uses the same templates, we didn’t have to spend a lot of time rewriting them. It was just a matter of adding in links, which only took about 30 seconds.
“Overall the transition to version 6 was very straightforward and we had no need to re-do the chart of accounts or spend a lot of time on staff training. Having worked with Castle before, we knew that they would make sure that they understood all our needs and had a high degree of trust in their ability to deliver a smooth upgrade. They worked very well with our own IT team to ensure that the project was delivered as planned.”
