Virtualisation delivers effective disaster recovery for Ingrams

Ingram Brothers is a family owned business, founded in 1895, that produces ingredients for the bakery trade. Based in Paisley, the business supplies bespoke products to bakery customers, food manufacturers and ice cream companies.
The company identified a need to upgrade their IT infrastructure and business continuity arrangements and on the advice of the team at Castle chose to implement a VMware virtualisation solution.
Simon Young, Managing Director at Ingram Brothers, said:
“Server failure would be disastrous for our business. Our customers call us all day, asking for detailed information on specifications, prices and forecasts of any changes or price increases. Reliability of our service is key so we need a system with a failsafe device, so that if one part goes down another takes over to keep us operational.”
The company’s Finance Manager, Angela Wilson, identified clear benefits in moving to virtualisation. She said:
“We were able to consolidate our business servers from three down to one and have now replicated the main server so we can be up and running in a couple of hours, if a problem arose. Our investment in virtualisation gives customers confidence in Ingrams because they know we have great business continuity. If a company is highly reliant on IT, virtualisation is a perfect solution.
The existing infrastructure would have meant increasing hardware from three to six physical servers, to deliver business continuity planning. Virtualisation makes the whole disaster recovery concept less complex by reducing our server needs to one physical server plus a replicated server.“
Andy Robertson, Technical Manager added:
“Instead of replacing or adding servers, we now have just two, which is a cost effective use of hardware as well as some reduction in energy usage. Our physical servers used to get very hot, whereas the hardware with virtual servers runs very cool.
