Virtualisation delivers greater efficiency & resilience for Anderson Strathern
Case Study: IT & Cloud Services
Leading Scottish law firm Anderson Strathern prides itself on being at the cutting edge of technological developments in both the legal and financial services sectors.
The firm recognises the value of technology and has developed sophisticated systems to meet the needs of clients at all times and from anywhere in the world.
Andrew Getley, Director of Information Systems at Anderson Strathern, led a recent initiative to move to a virtualised infrastructure in order to achieve a range of benefits for the firm. He said:
“With both our server room and our uninterruptible power supply (UPS) approaching capacity we were about to embark on an extensive CRM project that would require substantial additional server stock for both our live and Disaster Recovery (DR) systems. We recognised that a move to virtualisation would avoid the need for any additional processing hardware and minimal additional storage capacity. We also wanted to improve DR recovery speeds and simplify the management of system updates and changes, boosting our resources and spending less time on server support.
“We approached Castle because they have a market leading position within the Scottish legal sector. They have demonstrated extensive prior experience and were recommended by a number of other firms who had been through a similar process.
“We have now effectively refreshed all of our servers and consolidated all data storage onto a Storage Area Network, which means that new servers can be provisioned for testing and live use in just a matter of minutes.
“Our Disaster Recovery system is fully up to date whenever systems are updated or modified, without the need to apply the changes to both live and DR systems. The time required to invoke our DR system to the most recent backup is reduced to a few minutes and the process can now be undertaken by any member of the IT team and does not require specialist knowledge of individual applications.
“Often suppliers specify substantial additional processing capability which we are obliged to provide and we can now allocate and remove resource as required because we have a much clearer picture of processing and memory requirement for the system.
“In line with our commitment to the ISO 14001 Environmental Standard, the reduction of power needed to operate and cool servers was a key deliverable for the project. The introduction of the VMware solution has allowed us to empty three server racks and energy consumption has dropped significantly, whilst our UPS uptime has more than doubled.
“The team at Castle worked closely with us throughout the planning and implementation of the project and we were impressed with their ‘can do’ attitude.”
